Six of Pentacles – Charity

A honeypot ant gives up some of its supply of nectar to another worker. The “honeypots” of these ant species are fed with so much food that they are unable to move out of the “larders” of the nest, and so they serve as a food source in harsher months.

This card refers to the charity of giving away money or other material goods; it is not clear whether you are the receiver or the donator. It has a slightly darker twist on the idea of simply having a lot of money – here, the charitable ant’s purpose in life is to be a charitable ant, and so the loans or gifts given may not as generous or as free a gift as you might think. Perhaps the giver feels forced into it, or taken advantage of; or conversely the taker might be becoming too greedy and simply using the other person’s kindness.

In any case, this card is all about giving away and generosity. Either you are in the giver’s position, and have accumulated so much wealth that you can afford to kindly help others (hopefully freely, and not because you feel bound to!), or you are expecting charity yourself. This card encourages charitable thinking but warns about what happens if it’s pushed too far in the selfish directions.

notes: The Ace of Pentacles also has an ant… I wasn’t too sure about this. This was also one of the more annoying cards to edit (all the pentacles were rather annoying, actually – the result was rather too dark and thick pentacle lines because my original faint lines wouldn’t show up), and you can probably still see some random black-pen-splodge artifacts around. Also, not sure how much I want to be writing for these entries – more, less?
